One of the most common neurobehavioral disorders in childhood is ADHD and it can persist through adolescence and even into adulthood. Currently the causes of ADHD are unknown.

A person suffering with ADHD is chronically inattentive or has impulsive hyperactivity, or both to such a degree that daily functioning is compromised. To be diagnosed with the condition, the symptoms of the disorder must be present at levels that are higher than expected for a person’s developmental stage and must interfere with the person’s ability to function in different settings such as at home or at school. Those suffering with ADHD often struggle in important areas of life such as family relationships or school performance.

There are three types of ADHD that have been established and where symptoms are strongest in an individual:

1. Predominantly Inattentive. The individual has a hard time organizing or finishing a task. the individual may have a hard time paying attention to details, or following instructions or conversations. The individual becomes easily distracted or forgets details of daily routines.

2. Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive. The individual fidgets and talks extensively. The person finds it hard to sit still for long periods of time in order to finish a meal or complete homework. Smaller children may run, jump or climb constantly. The person constantly feels restless and has trouble with controlling impulses. A person who is impulsive will interrupt others, grab things from people, or speak at inappropriate times. It is hard for the person who suffers from this type of ADHD to wait their turn or listen to directions and may even have accidents and injuries than others.

3. Combined Type. Symptoms of the above two types are equally predominant in the person.
